Description
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a supplement and medication derived from the amino acid L-cysteine. It plays a crucial role in replenishing levels of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant in the body. NAC has been widely studied for its health benefits and therapeutic properties.
What Is NAC Good For?
- Antioxidant Support and Detoxification
- Helps replenish glutathione levels, which protect cells from oxidative stress and damage.
- Supports liver detoxification, especially useful in protecting against environmental toxins.
- Respiratory Health
- Acts as a mucolytic (breaks down mucus), making it easier to clear mucus from the lungs.
- Used in treating respiratory conditions like chronic bronchitis, COPD, asthma, and cystic fibrosis.
- Liver Support
- Effective in treating acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose, as it helps restore liver function by preventing liver damage.
- Mental Health and Brain Support
- May help reduce symptoms of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) by regulating glutamate levels in the brain.
- Some research suggests it may help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms for substances like nicotine, alcohol, and cocaine.
- Fertility Support
- Can improve sperm quality in men and may help with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women.
- Immune System Support
- Enhances immune function by protecting white blood cells and reducing inflammation.
